A truly grand send-off, in typical Italian fashion.
In keeping with Italy’s reputation for its incredible architecture, the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, or Monumental Cemetery, is exactly that – monumental. Designed by Carlo Maciachini, an Italian architect and restorer, this cemetery was built in the 19th century to consolidate all the pockets of cemeteries that were scattered around the city into one convenient location.
However, this is not just a typical final resting place for many regular people. This massive cemetery, one of the two largest in Milan, has within its compound Greek temples, sculptures, obelisks and all other structures to remember those no longer with us. Home to some of the most beautiful tombs, even the tombs are designed by some of the most prominent artists of their time such as Adolfo Wildt, Arturo Martini and Gio Pomodoro among other. Many notable historical figures buried here include the likes of pianist Vladimir Horowitz, A.C. Milan founder Herbert Kilpin and Anna Kuliscioff, founder of the Italian Socialist Party.
The Monumental Cemetery should certainly be on your list of places to visit when in Milan!
