Church of Santa Maria e San Donato

A church harbouring four dragon bones? Visit to find out more.

Located on the picturesque island of Murano lies the intriguing Church of Santa Maria e San Donato. Originally built in the 7th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the Venetian lagoon. Admire the fascinating 12th century Byzantine mosaics and the elegantly colonnaded façade facing a canal. Step inside the church and look out for the mosaic with cocks carrying a fox, which dates back to around 1140.

Visitors should also see the beautiful marble sarcophagus of Saint Donatus of Arezzo, who was said to have slain a dragon. In fact, the bones of that same dragon are said to hang in this very church. Four rib bones measuring more than 1 metre each are on display here, and they are not be missed. Maybe dragons did exist after all.
