Church of San Pietro in Montorio (San Pietro in Montorio)

Find a temple within a temple at the Church of San Pietro.

On the streets of Ancient Rome where once the Apostle Peter was held by his legs and crucified, the people raised a church from brick and mortar as a permanent echo of his sacrifice. They filled it with art of the Renaissance, from the lost empires of Greek and Rome as a curious meld of past and present in the midst of the 15th Century.

Today, this tribute is an aching sight to behold for anyone touring the streets of old Rome. Within the walls of the Church of San Pietro, one would find faded frescoes painted onto the wall a stroke at a time by the skilled hands of famous architects such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Unlike what one would expect of a church, the halls are filled with stone likenesses of Saint Peter and other Apostles to note. Grand marble columns and wide arches across the ceiling give the church the air of a palace more so than a site of humble devotion. The treasures of the Church of San Pietro are sure to impress both those in search of spiritual solitude as well as seekers of the fine arts.

Tips Before You Go
While most would expect an empty courtyard encircled by the cloisters, the outer cloister of the Church of San Pietro holds a smaller domed temple known as the ‘Tempietto’. The architectural influences reflected in this work of art are presumed to have been the precursor for the infamous Basilica of Saint Pietro found in the Vatican. An elaborate extension to the main complex, size is a poor gauge for the splendor within the Tempietto.
