Church of San Francesco

Experience peace and beauty.

If you take a look at the history Monteresso, the significant role that the Capuchin Friars take in the community are evident in the treasure that is the Church of San Francesco. Make your way up to the church, sitting on a promontory and overlooking the Monteresso Bay. Stand by the imposing statue of St. Francis Assisi feeding a dog, and look out at the vast spread of the sea before heading into the church.

The atmosphere of the peaceful sanctuary will no doubt soothe even the most troubled soul, and you can admire the wooden altar and choir, accompanied by Van Dyck’s “Crucifixion” and Luca Cambiaso’s “Saint Girolamo the Penitent”. If you take a look at the vaulted ceiling in the refectory, you will be treated to the sight of “Veronica” by Strozzi. With an ambiance that can only come from a structure that has stood for so long and well preserved, you wouldn’t be the first to settle in contemplative silence and let the peaceful atmosphere wash over you. Don’t let the climb daunt you: it’s definitely worth the effort!
