Anacapri, which is a wonder in itself, holds a great many treasures. One of those is the Church of San Michele Anacapri, built by architect D.A. Vaccaro, who was one of the greatest craftsmen of his time in Naples. Of course, there’s a great many churches to visit while in Italy. What makes San Michele so special?

Without doubt, it is the majolica-tiled pavement, which was done by Leonardo Chiaiese. Rediscover the Expulsion of Eden as you traverse these exquisite tiles that come together to paint a poignant image of Adam’s and Eve’s despair, with verdant greenery and all kinds of animals surrounding them. An architectural treasure that has been preserved since the late 18th century, the floor looks even more stunning when viewed from the organ loft, up the spiral staircase. You might find yourself unable to walk back down the stairs and across the tiles again, because it’s simply too beautiful walk on. To distract yourself from that heartrending notion, look up to admire the vaulted Baroque-style ceilings and the central dome, decorated with pleasing stuccowork. Truly a wonder not to be missed!
