Christ of the Abyss

When they say God is everywhere, they mean it.

If you thought you can only find salvation above ground, think again. When you’re diving in the waters of San Fruttusuo, you might come across a statue of Jesus. Don’t worry; what you’re seeing is real. This incredible statue rests with rocks scattered around it in the water, arms outstretched. It makes a beautifully haunting sight from afar.

Known as the Christ of the Deep and the Christ of the Abyss, this bronze statue is more than 15 meters deep in the sea, and has been there since 1954, when renowned Italian diver Duilio Marcante placed the statue in the water in honor of his friend, Dario Gonzatti, who had died there a year earlier. Gonzatti was the first Italian diver to try diving with scuba gear. The statue has naturally become a reference point for divers, and a powerful symbol. We can assure you that this is one dive you will never forget!
