Chinatown, San Francisco

The original American Chinatown.

Besides being the oldest Chinatown in North America, the San Francisco Chinatown also has the distinction of being the largest Chinese enclave outside of Asia. In fact, it is even more popular than the Golden Gate Bridge, drawing more visitors annually than the iconic bridge itself! This historically significant site continues to retain its Chinese roots and customs, so be prepared to get transported into another country when you step foot inside.

Enter through the Dragon Gate at the southern entrance of Chinatown, made with materials donated by The Republic of China in 1969 and considered to be the only authentic Chinatown Gate in North America. Another focal point is the Portsmouth Square, an open space where people can be seen playing Chinese chess and practicing Tai Chi. Besides that, visitors can also shop, enjoy authentic Chinese cuisines, as well as busk in an authentic Chinese atmosphere — which is especially prevalent during the Lunar New Year celebrations.
