Chillon Castle

This castle looks like something out of a postcard.

In French, this lovely castle is known as Château de Chillon, which only serves to heighten its romantic appeal. An island castle located on Lake Geneva, Chillon looks like something out of a medieval fantasy. It has all the elements of a fairytale setting: tall turrets, swooping battlements and the lake acting as a de facto moat. Lord Byron, the famous romantic, once remarked that anything he could say about Chillon would ‘fall short of the impressions they stamp’; indeed, even pictures can hardly do justice to the beautiful sight of Chillon from the shore. The castle’s interior is also a museum of sorts, preserving rooms and ancient furniture once used in the daily life of the castle’s aristocratic inhabitants. Its harmony of aesthetic elements and historical intrigue will capture the attention of history buffs and romantics alike, hence it is no wonder that it is among one of the most visited castles in Switzerland.

Tips Before You Go
Chillon is also famous for its wine tourism, so do enjoy the bounty of its wine cellar and wine press. Drink responsibly though! You wouldn’t want to end up drunk and make the whole experience unpleasant for everyone else. Otherwise, it is also possible to rent the castle for various private events if you would like.
