Children of the Earth Monument

A seaside collection of seven engraved tablets and a sculpture of friendship and laughter.

Located on the North Cape plateau, the Children of the Earth Monument is a heart-warming cluster of artfully organized bronze relief sculptures affixed to round granite tablets, all of them standing perpendicular to the ground. A symbol of cooperation, friendship, hope, and joy that transcends borders, the pure and childlike exuberance is evident in its simple, but sincerely wrought images. You would hardly believe me if I told you that these monuments were carved by seven children – within a week too. And yet that was how these statues actually came about. This monument was created in an international collaboration between children from all over the globe when they met up in North Cape in the summer of 1988. Framed by the backdrop of the baked ground and continuous strip of blue skies and sea, the monument’s greenish grey exterior is much larger than you would think, standing at about 2 metres tall. When you visit, the Children of the Earth Monument is a permanent reminder to be a little kinder to your fellow man.

Tips Before You Go
Winter may not be the best time to visit as visibility is poorer. The snow will also gather around the monument, making it difficult to decipher anything else besides mounds of snow.
