History and food all in one spot.
The Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School (more commonly, for obvious reasons, known as CHIJMES and pronounced as 'chimes') in Victoria Street, Singapore, is a great spot for a night out in the town. What was once a convent in the 20th-century was bought over and made into a complex with a head-spinning variety of restaurants, bars, and cafés. Despite the renovation, the building still pays respect to its heritage. Its green lawns, marble waterfalls, mini courtyards and neoclassical structures all are a tribute to the past.
The CHIJMES hall especially, which is available for private events, maintains the Gothic style of the original chapel, with its stained glass windows, intricate plasterwork and motifs of flora and birds. In fact, the hall was even gazetted as a national monument. In a way, CHIJMES is a great representation for the multicultural melting pot that is Singapore, going with the flow of the new, while paying respect to the old.
