Chiesa di Santo Stefano

This is one of the island’s oldest churches.

A former cathedral and a Catholic church, Santo Stefano overlooks Piazza Umberto I. With its baroque style architecture and impressive interior, you would not expect that its unassuming entrance makes it easy to miss. The church itself makes for an Instagram-worthy shot as it stands in the background of the piazza, white walls and large dome making for a lovely contrast against the soft blue of the sky. Smaller cupolas built in a series on the roof are the church’s the distinct feature.

As you enter, the well-preserved marble floor is sure to hold your attention, before the statue of San Constanzo, the patron saint of Capri, distracts you. The sheer tranquility within the church makes for a brief respite from the bustling crowds outside. The beauty of this church lies in its simplicity, with its refined architecture and intricate chapels. You can even find the tombs of Giacomo Arcucci and that of his nephew near the main altar. It’s hard to miss when Giacomo reclines on the tomb, hiding on to the design of the Certosa. Don’t miss a visit to this church!
