A seaside stilt house jetty settlement with a whiff of nostalgia.
Built in the 19th century to house Chinese immigrants, Chew Jetty is the largest and most prominent clan jetty in George Town. Composed of quaint stilt houses, Chew Jetty revives the rustic kampong lifestyle of the 1950s. Here, you can soak up the meandering thrum of the local atmosphere as you stroll down the cloister of wooden walkways wedged between wooden houses. While most remain as residential homes, these wooden houses have been transformed into restaurants selling street food as well as into shops selling souvenirs and other idiosyncratic knick-knacks that will stir up your childhood memories. Head out to the waterfront jetty piers where you can snap a couple of Instagram-worthy boardwalk shots against the picturesque backdrop of sampan boats, or even witness the setting sun dye the sea and skies in an orange brilliance. As a quiet hideaway from the incessant babble and bustle of the metropolis, Chew Jetty is a throwback to a simpler way of life.
