Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)

Get a new perspective of Lucerne the world’s oldest wooden bridge.

In 1993, when a blazing fire engulfed the original bridge, only a precious 30 of the 158 paintings that hung on its walls managed to survive the wreckage. These uniquely triangular framed paintings hang in sequence from the rafters of the walkway which stretches out into the serene river, with swans swimming and frolicking all around. So as you stroll along the path, cast your eyes upwards to enjoy the depiction local mythology and history, in particular bringing to life the legends of the city’s Patron saints, St. Leodegar and St Maurice. In Old Town, this wooden footbridge spans the river Reuss and features an octagonal turreted water tower, which gets its name from the way it seemingly floats atop the water. It is no coincidence that the tower resembles that of a castle wall, as the bridge and the tower were both defended the city as part of its fortifications. The railings are adorned with constantly revamped themes of colourful, cheerful bunches of flowers, and at night it lights up with dazzling lights which make it unmissable along the shorelines.
