Ayutthaya was once an ancient city and capital of Siam (now known as Thailand) in the 14th to 18th century until its demise under Burmese attack. When most of it fell to ruins, few parts of the kingdom were left behind. These have been restored and preserved since and they can now be found in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. The site is divided into three buildings and it takes about two hours for a complete tour around the place.

Named after the King of Ayutthaya – who built Wat Ratchaburana – back in the 15th century, the museum’s collections stem from items recovered from temples like Wat Ratchaburana itself and Wat Mahatat. Exhibitions from both of these temples are often highlights of visits as they showcase gold items that include extravagant jewellery and votive tablets. Fun fact: construction funds for the museum were achieved by selling such tablets!
