Not just surviving, but thriving with invaluable works of art.
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as St. Blaise’s Church, rests in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This Roman Catholic Cathedral adopts the Baroque style inside and out, due to its popularity during the 18th century when the current building was built. However, the history of this church dates further back. It was actually constructed around the 12th-14th centuries when English King Richard the Lionheart contributed to the building of the church after surviving a shipwreck on the nearby island of Lokrum.
Tragically, the earthquake of 1667 destroyed the then Romanesque basilica beyond repair. Today thankfully, the structure is safe and sound, with unmissable relics inside, such as the 15th-century gold and silver statue of St. Blaise and the Madonna della seggiola, painted by great artist Rafael in 1514. This magnificent cathedral is definitely a place worth visiting simply to admire its spectacular architecture, both on the outside and inside.
