Cathedral of St. Bavo, Haarlem

The beauty and majesty of this centuries-old cathedral will leave you utterly awestruck.

With elegant turrets, an enormous clock tower and a magnificent green dome that seems to just touch the sky, the Cathedral of St. Bavo is a beautiful and unmistakable part of the Haarlem skyline. Not to be confused with the Protestant St. Bavokerk or Grote Kerk, it is the main cathedral serving the Roman Catholic community in Haarlem.

The cathedral is made entirely out of brick, and though it may look like ordinary from the front, if you walk around the perimeter you’ll see majestic towers and extraordinary though grotesque gargoyles decorating its walls. Its interior is elegant and spectacular, with a high arched roof and walls and ceilings painted in a delicate white and gold pattern. The star of the show is the majestic 30-metre high organ, glittering in the sunlight streaming in from the stained glass windows just above it.
