An architecture museum or cathedral? The Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels appears more to fit the former’s label.
A 58,000 square foot complex, the bizarrely-shaped cathedral serving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles infuses post-modern architecture. Going against conventional designs of cathedrals, Pritzker Prize-winning architect - Rafael Moneo used acute and obtuse angles in his design. Resembling nothing close to a cathedral, the use of modern architecture is what makes this place unique!
The sharp angles and clean lines may initially appear obtrusive, however, the interior warmly invites you. Welcoming you with grand and elaborate bronze doors and eight-foot statue of Our Lady of Angels designed by Robert Graham, the beauty of the cathedral has just begun. The spacious interior is as stunning as the exterior, with a series of 25 tapestries adorning the walls, reaching out to the high ceilings. Whilst here, do check out the lower level, housing an elaborate mausoleum, with an equally modern interior. Elaborate stained glass windows (belonging to Judson Studios) welcome, with the soft glow of natural light, lending an ethereal glow. Over 6,000 crypts are buried here, with notable people such as Saint Vibiana, also known as the “virgin martyr” and also several archbishops. A unique religious experience in an unconventional space, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels is one cathedral you’ll never forget.
