Take a trip to Brazil’s past at Catete Palace.
In Rio de Janeiro’s neighborhood of Flamengo, a neoclassical building stands apart from its neighbors. There isn’t much you can glean from its pink granite and marble exterior, but this building was once the country’s presidential palace and hides tales within its walls that you won’t discover until you venture in. The bronze condors, ready to soar, sit at the top of the building. The Catete Palace has since been converted to a Republic Museum and theatre. As you walk into this 19th-century structure, set your eyes upon the grand decorations and ornate ceilings.
The elaborate staircase will take you to various places, including the Ministerial Room. This mansion was the setting for the death of presidents, and where important treaties were signed. Perhaps the room that is the most beguiling is the bedroom of former president Getúlio Vargas - he committed suicide here, stressed by the political strife over his methods, despite his popularity with the people (he was known as the “Father of the Poor”). Head out into the surrounding garden, and keep an eye out for the statue in the lake. There is an allegorical sculpture within the greenery as well. It is definitely with a visit while you’re in Rio de Janeiro.
