Catacombs of San Gennaro

Where past truly coexists with the present.

The Catacombs of San Gennaro are a part of the vast network that is the Catacombs of Naples and are impressive in their own right, including being the most extensive in southern Italy. If you're on your way to the well-known city of Naples, then you can't pass by without a visit to the catacombs that are tightly intertwined with the lives of the city's people.

Head down to the catacombs to explore its two levels, marveling at how long such a magnificent structure has been preserved. The lower level is known to have been around since the late 2nd century! From the lower vestibule, the corridors spread out and were built to create the maze of corridors you can explore. Frescoes run along the upper vestibule, and there is the Bishops’ Crypt here, the resting place of Naples’ first bishops. The tomb of the patron saint, San Gennaro, is close to this as well, from when he was interred in the catacombs in the 5th century. That’s not all you can find here: the oldest known portrait of San Gennaro rests in these catacombs. Be transported back in time as you step into the Catacombs of San Gennaro, and when you leave, it’ll be with the treasure that is knowledge.
