Castletown House

A sprawling countryside mansion within a scenic river parkland.

Once belonging to William Conolly, the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, Castletown House is the biggest and grandest Palladian-style mansion in Ireland. Take a quiet stroll through the extensive rooms of the 18th century house – from the dining room, to the butler’s pantry, even to the boudoir – and marvel at the insightful yet curious relics and paintings within. Learn about the true rags to riches story of William Conolly, a man who against all odds became one of the most notable politicians in Ireland. Castletown House also doubles as a museum, featuring interesting art, design, or history exhibitions from time to time. Once you have explored every nook and cranny of the house, you can head to the Courtyard Café located in the Kitchen Wing for a bite, or head out into the parklands for a scenic walk. The vast meadows of wildflowers tucked into the bordering oak trees and the river offer generous spaces for picnics. You could also explore the quaint outhouses surrounding the mansion and admire their gorgeous architecture. If you are lucky, you might even find yourself in the thick of a craft market occasionally held in the parklands. With a never-ending list of fun activities, Castletown House is a wonderland playground for all ages.
