Castle of Monolithos

One of the four most powerful fortresses on Rhodes island in ancient history!

The Castle of Monolithos is situated near Monolithos village in Greece, built atop a rather craggy rock but dominating the surrounding landscape. It may be a little off the beaten track as compared to other tourist attractions but it is definitely worth a visit. You may drive to the foot of the cliff then walk up to the summit.

The castle was considered one of the four most powerful fortresses on Rhodes island and inside the castle walls sit two 15th century chapels - St. George and St. Panteleimon. Today, only ruins of what used to be a magnificent castle remains. But what draws visitors to the summit is not the ruins nor churches, but the stunning aerial views over the sea and islets off the western coast as well as the mountain of Akramytis and the hills that surround! Definitely not to be missed when you are in Greece.
