Castle of Coppet (Château de Coppet)

A quietly nostalgic place for you to discover ‘history within history’.

Also known as the Château de Coppet, this beautiful castle will enchant you with its present appearance and fascinating story, even if you are not a particularly huge fan of history. The beauty and luxury of this castle illustrate the wealth of its previous owners Jacques Necker and his daughter Germaine, who went on to become the famed Madame de Staël. She was banished from Paris by Napoleon Bonaparte, who deemed her accomplishments as an essayist and writer displaying ‘too developed a spirit for a woman.’ Exiled to the Château, its atmosphere still retains a trace of her haunting loneliness. Today, her story cannot fail to touch the hearts of even the hardest cynic. As you admire the beautiful textiles, architecture, and murals in the house (all of which are stunningly well-preserved), keep half a mind on the remarkable intelligence of the woman who left them behind.
