The Castle of Avio, which is known as the "Castello di Avio" in Italian, is a fascinating medieval castle. Nestled in a corner of northern Italy, the ruins of the castle rise in the distance and overlook the village of Sabbionara. If you listen close, you just might hear the rumble of the Adige river. Don't be deceived by the crumbling walls: the castle is a formidable remnant of the past, with its 11th-century keep and five towers. The baron's residence is also located within the walls, which were erected in the 13th century.

Here, the finest of preserved medieval frescoes will greet you, and if you continue to the guardhouse, you can see historic 13th-century military victories running across the walls. These frescoes are part of the large collection found in the castle, which remains one of the most (if not the most) accessible castles in the Adige valley. Of course, there are plenty of other places of interest, such as the “Picadora”, the tower where convicts were hanged. So, what are you waiting for?
