Castle Mountain

A towering castle in the skies, if you look from afar!

Castle Mountain is a mountain situated within Banff National Park in Canada. It is the outcome of older sedimentary and metamorphic rocks being thrusted upwards over the younger rocks which form its base. The castle-like appearance of the mountain is formed by the rock weathering at different rates on various layers - faster on softer shale and less so on the harder dolomite and limestone surfaces. The mountain was named by James Hector in 1858 for its appearance but from 1946 to 1979, it was renamed Mount Eisenhower to commemorate General Dwight Eisenhower who was a momentous figure during WWII. Public pressure forced the name to be returned to its original and hence, its current name.
