A magnificent castle brimming with art and history, strategically built along a riverbank.
A majestic and spectacular edifice, Castelvecchio is a castle that is rich with history and regarded as the most important military construction during the time of the Scaliger Dynasty. Built in 1354 to defend the citizens of Verona, its asymmetrical design was interestingly designed to provide a quick escape route northwards. The castle, best recognised by its red-brick walls and soaring arches, is the result of impressive restoration efforts by Carco Scarpa and Licisco Magagnato after it suffered damage during World War II. Enjoy a peaceful tour around the castle, which sits remarkably along the banks of Adige river, and which is connected to the ancient Castelvecchio Bridge. Soak in the intricate details of the ruins and pause everyone once in a while to appreciate beautiful views of the city and river. Visitors are welcome to enter the ‘Castelvecchio Museum’, which boasts 29 rooms of historic sculptures and paintings dated between the 1300s and 1700s.
