Castell de Montjuïc (Montjuic Castle)

A bitter past but a better future.

Atop the 173m-high Montjuïc hill in Barcelona rests a war hero from almost 400 years ago. The Montjuic Castle is a fortress that defended the nation like a watchful soldier from the Reaper’s War in 1640 onwards. Sadly, this hero became somewhat a villain during the Spanish Civil War, when Dictator Francisco Franco had over 170 people executed here. An iconic symbol of repression, this old military fort is a representation of the city's struggles endured during different periods in its history. Despite its horrid past, it is now a peaceful site, hosting concerts and seminars. You can even take a cable car ride to enjoy some great views over the Mediterranean and explore the castle. Do bring along your camera, as the aerial view from above will imbue serenity in you.
