Casablanca Cathedral

Right at the heart of Casablanca is the strikingly beautiful church known as the Casablanca Cathedral.

The Casablanca Cathedral is an enormous fascinating church located in the middle of the city. Also known as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or Sacré-Coeur Cathedral, it was built in 1930 while Morocco was still under the Catholic French rule, by fusing both neo-Gothic and Moroccan Islamic architecture. In doing so, the church has a rather unique façade, which you should definitely drop by to see and take photos of, especially since it is almost unheard of to have a church built in a partly Islamic style. Based on a technicality, the Casablanca Cathedral is technically still considered a church as it has never been the seat of a bishop. Unfortunately, it ceased operations after Morocco became independent, but the church is still open on certain days for visitors to explore inside. While it might not be as visually impressive inside as it is outside, the interior has a sort of old, rustic charm to it. The staircase leading to the roof is pretty much crumbling, but if you make the climb up, you will be treated to magnificent views overlooking Casablanca.

Tips Before You Go
The staircase in the church’s tower does not have hand rails so it can be quite dangerous, especially if you’re bringing kids. Those with difficulty walking might also want to keep away from climbing the staircase.
