1885 can be seen to have been a pivotal year in Catalan modernist architecture – it was the year that Antoni Gaudí completed work on Casa Vicens, his first ever building. Gaudi, a master of modernism had designed the summerhouse located in the Carrer de les Carolines, Barcelona, where the building was made for brick and tile factory owner Manuel Vicens i Montaner. Gaudi was inspired by Neo-Mudéjar architecture for this venture, which follows a Moorish style, along with Indian and Japanese characteristics. Nature was also integral to the design of this building, with palm tree leaf-like representations on the gate. Covered in white and green ceramic tiles and bricks, this 4-storey UNESCO World Heritage Site is a sight to behold.
