County Kerry, Ireland
Carrauntoohil

Climb Ireland’s highest mountain to experience a splendid view of everything below, including the Atlantic Ocean if you’re lucky enough.

Carrauntoohil is not only the tallest peak of the Macgillycuddy range, it’s also the tallest in the entirety of Ireland. Located in the county of Killarney, Carrauntoohil stands at a staggering 1,038 metres, challenging anyone that attempts to hike it. Many people start their ascent at Cronin’s Yard which is just outside of Killarney. From here, it’ll take you approximately six to seven hours to reach the top and the journey can be physically demanding. But don’t give up though. While it might be exhausting walking up the mountain trails, you will be treated to wonderful sights of the countryside all around you. The higher you go, the better your views too. What’s more, the air becomes a lot fresher up there! Can you imagine air even fresher than the Irish countryside? It might sound impossible, but once you reach the top you’ll wish you never had to come down. Besides the glorious air, the view up top is simply stunning. If you plan your ascent carefully, you might be in time to catch the waning sunset as well, and it is to die for. Pray that it will be a clear day when you visit, because you can actually catch a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean on clear days.

Tips Before You Go
Prepare yourself both physically and mentally a few months before committing to this hike. It’s not easy at all, so physical conditioning is highly recommended. Wear shoes with ample ankle support too, as this will minimise the chances of sprains.
