Observe (from afar) some of the world’s wildest animals.
The 19-hectare Carnac Island near Fremantle, Western Australia, is home to some pretty fascinating creatures. The rarest sea lion species in the world, the Australian sea lion, resides on this island when it is not breeding season. Because of their relatively harmless appearance, you may be tempted to approach them; but you must avoid this instinct, as they can become rather aggressive if they perceive you as a threat.
This island is also home to tiger snakes, one of the world’s deadliest snakes. As these snakes are mostly found inland, visitors should stick to the beach area. Legend has it that in 1903, a snake showman had released these poisonous snakes onto the island, but tragically, he and his wife died after being bitten. Aside from the snakes and sea lions, the Carnac Island is also home to the fairy tern and several other birds. Previously known to be home to prisoners, Carnac Island has no doubt come a long way from its beginnings.
