Captain Cook’s Cottage

A quaint cottage that migrated all the way from England.

If there was ever a cottage that has been painstakingly re-built one too many times, it is that of Captain Cook’s Cottage. Made in 1755, this cottage located in the heritage-listed Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne, is the oldest building in Australia. However, it was not always in Australia. Originally built in Yorkshire, England, Captain Cook’s Cottage was brought over to Melbourne by Sir Russel Grimwade in 1934. Built by the parents of British explorer and Captain of the Royal Navy James Cook FRS, this cottage was torn down brick by brick, with each brick numbered, and then re-built in Australia. Come and see this cottage that was built not once, but twice, in two different countries altogether!
