Where bones lie in every nook and cranny.
Some of you who fancy a tinge of the macabre in their attractions will enjoy the Capela dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones, in Evora, Portugal. This intriguing chapel lies within the Church of St Francis, a Gothic church completed in the early 16th century. Embedded with approximately 5000 human bones covering from floor to ceiling, this chapel is definitely not for the faint hearted. The purpose for this was more functional than merely morbidity – due to overcrowded graveyards in the 16th century, bodies were exhumed and bones were cast here, making their final resting place a holy one. The exhumation is in accordance with the commonly held beliefs then and aligns with the Counter-Reformation ideology which proposes that these bodies would be closer to God. Be welcomed into the chapel with a phrase which essentially means "We, the bones that are here await yours.”, giving you a rather eerie, but poignant reminder of human mortality.
