These temples are the stuff of legend.
Tucked away on an isolated hillside and obscured by frequent mist is one of Indonesia’s greatest treasures, the Candi Gedong Songo. ‘Gedong Songo’ means ‘nine buildings’ in the native language, so named because of the significance of the number 9 in the Hindu religion. One of the oldest temple complexes in the region’s religious memory, its intricate structure was carved entirely out of volcanic stone, making it look like it’s not quite from this world. Getting there is somewhat of a pilgrimage in itself: it’s located precisely 1,200 metres above sea level on Mount Ungaran Semarang, and is accessible only by car or horseback. When you reach the site, you’ll be welcomed by the bracing cool air and mountain breeze, as temperatures drop to as low as 19 degrees. Take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty and panoramic views all around you. Very few foreign tourists know about this well-hidden secret, as the temple complex seems to be shrouded in a veil of mystery. You’ll definitely discover a whole new and untouched world as you take your time exploring this sprawling attraction.
