Candi Arjuna (Arjuna Temple)

A mysterious temple with a story to tell.

Ethereal and mystical, this ancient temple complex is sure to make you feel as if you have just been transported to another time and location. The Arjuna cluster is surrounded by a desolation of mountains and hills in the Dieng plateau, making it a veritable pilgrimage even for the casual visitor. These temples are in fact one of the most important Hindu legacies of the 8th century, and tell us a little about the time when Hinduism was just beginning to gain status as a world religion. Although it may not be the most imposing Hindu temple around, it was built a good deal earlier than the great complexes at Yogyakarta and Magellang, and thus hold a historical significance that cannot be denied. Legend has it that Arjuna, hero of the great Indian epic ‘The Mahabharata’, stumbled upon this spot while on a pilgrimage. While searching for water to quench his incalculable thirst he prayed to the Hindu god Lord Krishna, who presented Arjuna with a sword. Water gushed out when Arjuna struck the ground with the sword, and the location eventually became sacred. Today, you can almost feel legend mixing with history as you take a trip down to this sacred site.
