Camposanto Monumentale

A cemetery resembling a masterpiece.

Constructed by none other than Giovanni di Simone, the genius behind the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it is no surprise that the Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) was the main cemetery for Pisa’s affluent classes for centuries. This 13th century cemetery was filled with magnificent frescoes from the 14th and 15th century, painted by Italian artists such as Antonio Veneziano but unfortunately, most of these frescoes were destroyed during World War II.

Nevertheless, the pristine marble cloisters and Classical art sculptures are nothing short of awe-inspiring, and alone, are worth a visit to this architectural wonder. Pay your respects to the upper class Pisans of yesteryear, while admiring their final resting place at Pisa’s Camposanto Monumentale.
