Callington Mill

Witness an authentic windmill at work at Callington Mill, the only working colonial mill in Australia.

Peering out curiously from behind its surrounding gardens is Callington Mill, Australia’s only working colonial mill. Fall in love with its charming Georgian-style aesthetic, with red brick walls contrasting beautifully against the bright green grass. The compound is not made up of just the mill though – it contains a total of 6 buildings including a pigsty, a stable and a granary, allowing visitors to have a glimpse into the life of a millworker in the 19th century.

Built in 1837, Callington Mill was one of the most technologically superior mills of its time. Its onion-shaped cap for example, is self-turning, ensuring its sails are always pointed to the wind. Sadly, the mill was considered out-of-date within a short span of 20 years, and was declared bankrupt in 1892. Following its restoration in 2010, the mill is now proudly back to work, producing top quality flour ground by stone, which is used by bakers in the village. Baking enthusiasts can buy a bag of the all-natural, freshly milled flour during their visit as well!

An authentic experience all jam-packed into a tall, narrow tower, you will emerge a satisfied visitor after the informative, 45 minutes guided tour that will introduce you to the inner workings of the mill.
