While it did not house Royalty, Leiden Castle proves to be awe-inspiring.
The Burcht van Leiden, also known as the Leiden Castle, sits atop a motte in the center of Leiden. The ramparts of the castle rest on arches and carvings surround the gate, a decorative addition from the 18th century. The castle was mostly used a place of refuge from flooding, and around the end of the 13th century, its defensive significance was lost.
The town of Leiden flourished around the castle, and now, the public is welcome to step past the iron gates at the base of the hill and walk up to the keep. Pause at the keep wall to gaze at the portal with its intricate heraldric symbols denoting the leading families of the city. The ramparts offer a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, over the rolling hills and beyond and if you’re seeking some peace and quiet, this is where you want to be.
