Buque Museo Corbeta Uruguay

Don’t miss this ship, standing strong in the wake of her colourful past.

The ARA Uruguay, although currently a nautical museum, boasts a glorious past. She is the last of President Sarmiento’s legendary squadron, and its oldest! The century-over old ship has plenty of history, from revolutions to ransoms, and is definitely no stranger to fame. She was originally built as a gunboat, although has served as a school boat and even a fisheries base supply ship. In 1903, the Uruguay made international headlines for her heroic rescue of the crew of the Antarctic, which had been shipwrecked.

Now decommissioned, the corvette is moored at the pier of the Naval School in Puerto Madero, encouraging visitors’ curiosity. Head on board to discover the captain’s cabin and officers’ mess, or wander about to find the artefacts that were rescued from shipwrecks. Children will certainly enjoy bounding around this three-mast beauty and imagining sailing out into the vast ocean.
