During colonial times, the Buenos Aires Cabildo was used as the seat of the ayuntamiento (Spanish colonial council which governing a municipality) and served as the government house of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. Now, in all its opulence, the building is a museum that enthralls visitors to visit and learn more about Argentina’s history in the colonial times and the May Revolution.


Originally constructed from adobe and thatch, the building is now a distinct white, with a central bell tower, making it the only remaining government building on the Plaza de Mayo, which remains in existence from the colonial times. Head inside to discover original artefacts and documents dating from the Spanish colonial era. These include clothes, artwork and jewelry originating from 18th century Buenos Aires. You can even access the former jail! A visit to the Buenos Aires Cabildo is a must if you want to appreciate the rich history of this vibrant city and its capital.

Tips Before You Go
The museum is closed on Mondays, and entry is free on Tuesdays. Do check opening times before visiting. Guided visits in English are available from October to March.
