Brunswick Monument

A beautiful tribute to the benefactor of Geneva.

Seen from afar, the Brunswick Monument looks like the top half of a majestic cathedral spire transplanted to the ground. But don’t be fooled: this lovely building is right where it belongs. Its elegant structure acts as a mausoleum and houses the replica tomb of the Duke of Brunswick. The Duke was a scandalous and unique individual, who bequeathed his immense fortune to the city of Geneva and requested this beautiful monument dedicated to his name in return. He specifically indicated that it be modelled on the Scaligeri family tombs of Verona, which date from the 14th century. And indeed, the Brunswick Monument is a work of art, with its neo-Gothic architecture and intricate detailing. It features a series of delicate spires around the main tower, which itself is elaborately carved. There is an equestrian statue at the base of the monument, as well as several bas-relief scenes of European history surrounding the sarcophagus. Whether you are an architectural enthusiast or a layperson, your enjoyment of this iconic monument will be equally spontaneous.

Tips Before You Go
The position of the monument gives you a slightly elevated view over Lake Geneva, from its side of the river. Do go there when the sky is clear, as you will get a nice glimpse of Mont Blanc as well. You might want to check the weather forecast beforehand, so that you don’t end up disappointed when all you can see are clouds.
