Frequently mentioned in pop culture, Brunnsparken has captured the imagination of many.
While the word ‘Brunnsparken’ may be Swedish for ‘well park’, the attraction that bears the same name actually refers to a central square in Gothenburg. It is located between two popular shopping malls Nordstan and Arkaden, as well as Norra Hamngatan and Södra Hamngatan, which are two of Gothenburg’s oldest streets.
With its prime central location (‘Inom Vallgraven’) and ubiquitous shopping centres, Brunnsparken has become a popular outdoor communal space in Gothenburg. The area itself is pleasant to relax and hang out, with a little bridge that crosses the river and shops lining either side of the riverbank. You can walk from one side to the other, enjoying the busy synergy that flows around you. Of course, if you’re looking for a bit of Swedish culture, do look out for the several interesting statues scattered around the area. One of the most prominent ones is the statue popularly known as the ‘Johanna’ (also known as the ‘Sowing Woman’), which was unveiled at the square way back in 1883. Several bus and tram lines also converge on the area, rendering it the centre of public transport in Gothenburg along with the Gothenburg Central Station and the Nils Ericson Terminal.
