Visit the birthplace of Amsterdam’s favourite beer.
The Brouwerij ‘t ij has been serving Amsterdam its unique craft beers since 1985. It is housed in a bathhouse-turned-brewery, underneath an iconic classic windmill – the largest in Amsterdam. Visit the between Friday to Sunday for a tour of the brewery, where a guide will explain its history and introduce you to the work that goes behind creating Amsterdam’s best-loved beer. The 20-minute tour ends with a free glass of your choice of beer.
After your tour, sample the wide variety of beers Brouwerij ‘t ij has to offer at its pub, which is in the same building as the brewery. All of its beers are available in the pub, and if you’re lucky you might be able to try some seasonal or experimental brews as well. Feeling hungry? The pub provides a few tasty snacks to go with your drink, such as Skeapsrond cheese, which is made using the milk of sheep fed with pulp leftover from brewing. This results in a cheese unique to Brouwerij ‘t ij, and ensures that the brewing process is waste-free and environmentally friendly.
