Don’t miss out on this thought-provoking sculpture.
Once in a while, you see a masterpiece so poignant, that it gains international recognition. The Broken Chair Sculpture is one such work of art, resting in the Place des Nations in Geneva. Crafted in 1997 by Swiss sculptor Daniel Berset, the chair was commissioned by Handicap International, in their bid to convince nations to agree to ban landmines. It attempts to make the suffering of the victims of violence more salient, with four chair legs, of which one is broken in half. The broken chair also intends to symbolize the strength and dignity of the victims in the face of adversity, encourage people to act against atrocities, and aid the victims in their endeavor to rehabilitate themselves. Standing tall at 12m high, the Broken Chair sculpture looks upon all who visit it with hope for a better future.
