It all started with one man.

The British Museum is a cultural arts museum with ten departments of curated pieces from all around the globe, amounting to over eight million works. The museum was founded in 1753, largely from the life collection of Sir Hans Sloane. The founding collection was mostly books, manuscripts, and antiquities such as coins and drawings. Since then, the museum's collection has grown extensively to include world-famous artefacts such as the Rosetta stone, the Parthenon Marbles, as well as Egyptian mummies! The museum attracts over six million visitors a year and does not charge an admission fee, except for loan exhibitions. Well, what are you waiting for?
