Brighton Beach

One of Melbourne’s most beautiful beaches, featuring the iconic colorful bathing boxes (82 of them!).

Brighton Beach is located in the upmarket suburb of Port Phillip Bay, a 30-minute drive from Melbourne's CBD. Upper Brighton Beach leads into Middle Brighton Beach, which is known primarily for its historical sea baths and iconic pier. The famous spot on Brighton's coastline is Dendy Street Beach, known for its strip of colorful huts or bathing boxes that line the beachfront. Dating back to the Victorian era, the boxes were from a time when beachgoers had private changing and storage facilities. Built with wooden-framed structures, the huts all retain classic Victorian architectural features like weatherboard sides and corrugated iron roofs. Each of the 82 huts on the beach have their own unique paintings, giving Brighton Beach its very own character. A picturesque beach with pristine white sand, clear blue waters and a wide range of restaurants and retail shops; it is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike.

Tips Before You Go
People mainly come to Brighton Beach for one purpose and one purpose only; that is to take as many photos with the bathing boxes that dot the landscape here. As such, weekends are the worst possible time for you to visit as tons of people will be here. If you wish to take beautiful, uninterrupted shots of the bathing boxes, then it is recommended that you come on a weekday, preferably early in the morning or late in the evening. The crowd is pretty much nonexistent by then, so you can just snap away to your heart\'s content.
