A little bridge famous for its architecture and history.
Enclosed in glowing white limestone with windows overlooking the Rio del Palazzo canal, the Bridge of Sighs in Venice was built in the year 1600 to connect the Doge's prisons. It is said that condemned prisoners being led through it to the executioner would sigh as they looked out the window for one final look at the beautiful Venice, resulting in the bridge’s name. However, in actual fact, the bridge was only completed long after Venice’s days of inquisition, and the cells were largely used to contain lesser criminals. Today, it is more well-known as a fine example of bridge architecture and perhaps as a place of happy beginnings. Legend has it that if a couple were to kiss under the bridge at sunset, they will be blessed with eternal love! Drift gently along the canal with your partner and watch the sunset paint the buildings crimson and orange – a scene that is sure to draw a sigh from you lovebirds.
