Bou Inania Madrasa Meknes

The Bou Inania Madrasa is definitely among the top places that you must visit on your Moroccan holiday.

Bou Inania Madrasa in Meknes, not to be confused with the one in Fez, was once a thriving Islamic institution. Located just opposite the Grande Mosquée, it was founded in 1341 by Abu al-Hassan Ali ibn Othman, the ruler at that time. With abundant zellij that will make you wish you could take photographs of them all, the two-storey madrasa sings the glory of the wonderful Merenid Moroccan architecture. The madrasa in Fez that we mentioned earlier is a grander version of this, but Meknes’s Bou Inania Madrasa is no less charming. The beautifully carved wooden ceiling will probably have you craning your neck just to keep staring at it. But look out for the exquisite columns and doors. You might accidentally walk into them, but why not admire their intricate designs instead? Back in the days when the school was still operating, it accommodated students on both floors while teachers lived only on the first floor in more luxurious rooms. Can you imagine boarding schools looking as breath-taking as this?

Tips Before You Go
This one’s only a short visit if you’re not an architecture geek but it’s definitely worth it. Just keep in mind to dress according to social mores, especially since it was formerly a religious site.
