A garden by the beach, Botanisk Tradgarden brings together the wonders of Mediterranean fauna with the taste of salt in the air touched by the sea breeze of Visby. Its beauty lies in its order, a compact array of plants from the continent and beyond in an enchanting display. Over half a million visitors stroll in to appreciate its glamour each year, taking their time to breathe in the clear air and quiet respite. Sun dappled walkways with the boughs of figs and walnuts overhead lead to the vibrant hues of tulip trees and prides of India, patches of startling color against the green. Travel through the countryside brought to the garden through the apple trees before entering shaded woodland just meters away. Within a single garden, one even finds the ruins of a church, its vestigial remains peeking through the Swedish Ivy that has covered it like a quilt. Its glassed greenhouses are the site of exhibitions and filled with diasporas of plants from the tropics and beyond. In fact, you could say that the Botaniska Tradgarden is a microcosm of plant life from around the world.

The greenhouses have the largest collection of tropical orchids in Sweden, carnivorous plants and the rare Easter Island tree, which is extinct in its natural environment.
