Botafogo Bay

A postcard-worthy bay.

Botafogo Bay goes back to colonial times when Brazil was colonised by the Portuguese. The site once comprised fishermen’s huts and several farms for its first two centuries under colonial rule, but these gave way to country homes constructed by Portuguese middle and wealthy classes escaping to Rio when France invaded Portugal. Gradually, Rio’s residents turned these homes into deluxe manors and the Botafogo Bay became a place for people to unwind at. However, development also came with an undesirable outcome: pollution. Raw sewage was disposed into the bay from a pipe, and reports of pollution date back to as early as 1918. Although pollution is still the bay’s pressing issue today, it is still frequented by locals and tourists for its picture-perfect views. To get a full view of the bay, stroll or cycle along the lane that goes around it. When you’re in the area, don’t forget to check out the Botafogo neighbourhood too. A cultural centre in the day and a nightlife scene in the evening, you’ll be treated to a fulfilling day there.
