A fortress turned museum housing an invaluable collection of Moroccan weaponry, as well as a priceless view of the Medina.
The fortress of Borj Nord is a spectacular yet often overlooked military museum. With weapons from all time periods from pre-history to modern-day, as well as hailing from every corner of Morocco, Borj Nord retells history with its rich collection of military artefacts.
Many of the weapons in the museum are not only deadly, but are enchantingly beautiful too. Gilded sword hilts, jagged daggers encrusted with precious stones and rifle butts featuring sparkling gemstones and jewels glittering against the museum’s walls, such is its appeal to both artists and military enthusiasts. One of the museum’s highlights is a 16th-century canon used during the Battle of the Three Kings, which is 5 metres long and weighs an astonishing 12 tons.
Built atop a hill, Borj Nord commands a dazzling view of the Medina below. This strategic position was initially chosen by the Sultan to monitor his people’s activities for fear of an uprising but today, it provides panoramic views for tourists to appreciate the Medina’s beauty.
